Suzuki, 38, is in the final year of a five-year, $90 million contract, but the Yankees will pay only $2.5 million of what remains, and the two players they gave up are not their top prospect.  (中略) Fans, too, who still respected Suzuki here (Seattle), had come to realize that he was a vestige of another era.  (中略) Jay Buhner, the former star player who threw out Monday’s ceremonial first pitch, said he would “vomit” if the Mariners re-sign Suzuki. (中略) The Yankees are not getting vintage Suzuki, although they certainly do not need anyone to save this first-place team.  He has shown considerable decline over the past two seasons from the days when he rapped out 200 hits in 10 consecutive seasons.  The 2012 season has been his worst.  He went into Monday’s game batting .261 with a paltry .288 on-base percentage, and did not get a hit in three more trips to the plate after his third-inning single.  It is a long way from the player he was as recently as 2010, when he hit .315 with .214 hits and had a .359 OBP.  But the Yankees hope that Suzuki will be revitalized playing for a potential playoff team for the first time in 11 years.

What must be admitted, every painfully, is that this is a disaster “Made in Japan”.

Its fundamental causes are to be found in the ingrained conventions of Japanese culture: our reflexive obedience; our reluctance to question authority; our devotion to “sticking with the program”; our groupism; and our insularity.

You know that if you are too risky in your research you will get nothing done.  Or you can play it safe and reap rewards for doing essentially the same thing over and over again, but that’s really not getting much done and you have to force yourself not to do that.  You have to find the stuff that pushes the edges for you, and to do that you have to be honest and say, “What can I personally tackle?”.  Also, you have to know the times you live in.  Is there enough information for me to make progress here?  When do you yourself say you are not going to be able to solve this?  So you have to introspect and that is the good part.  But you have to guess too, and you could guess wrong.  There are no guarantees.

Great scientists, the pioneers that we admire, are not concerned with results but with the next questions.  The eminent physicist Enrico Fermi told his students that an experiment that successfully proves a hypothesis is a measurement; one that does not is a discovery.  A discovery, an uncovering – of new ignorance.  (Ignorance: How It Drives Science より抜粋)

If an outcome can be reliably predicted from a limited amount of starting information, then you have gained an understanding of an underlying principle, of the rules governing this bit of the universe. A particular set of genes predicts the likely color of your hair or eyes; two massive bodies at a certain distance will orbit each other with a particular period.  These are all instances where knowing the underlying mechanism allows you to make reliable predictions about outcomes.  In science, predicting is knowing.

「Incompleteness Theorems」(by Kurt Gödel)
In his Incompleteness Theorems, Gödel demonstrated that every logical system that is complex enough to be interesting must remain incomplete.

It (Scientific process) is black cats in dark rooms.  As the Princeton mathematician Andrew Wiles describes it: It’s groping and probing and poking, and some bumbling and bungling, and then a switch is discovered, often by accident, and the light is lit, and everyone says, “Oh, wow, so that’s how it looks,” and then it’s off into the next dark room, looking for the next mysterious black feline.  If this all sounds depressing, perhaps some bleak Beckett-like scenario of existential endlessness, it’s not.  In fact, it’s somehow exhilarating.

Herbert Spencer, a contemporary of Darwin’s, advanced the notion that societies could be understood as organisms, where individual humans could be thought of as cells, institutions played the role of organs, and development was driven by some loose analog of natural selection.  It was Spencer, in fact, not Darwin, who coined the phrase “survival of fitness”.

The Halo Effect refers to our tendency to extend our evaluation about one particular feature of another person - say that they are tall or good-looking – to judgments about other features, like their intelligence or character, that are not necessarily related to the first feature at all.
